The first interior designs of a development to transform the former council offices at Neuadd Maldwyn in Welshpool into an independent living scheme for older people have been revealed.

The scheme, which is subject to planning permission, is being developed by housing association ClwydAlyn in partnership with Powys County Council. If approved, it will also provide a boost to local employment, creating up to 20 jobs.

The 66 one- and two-bedroom apartments are designed for local people or people with close connections to Powys aged over 60 with an assessed care or support need. The aim is to provide accommodation in the town which gives tenants their ‘own front door’ but with the reassurance of 24/7 support on site should they need it.

Other features of the scheme include communal facilities for events and activities, a restaurant, onsite parking and landscaped areas.

“This scheme has been developed and designed to meet the needs of local older people, addressing the need for high quality, affordable homes in Powys. As well as providing modern, comfortable apartments, it will also create vibrant communal and outside spaces for residents to enjoy and crucially, the scheme will provide a welcome boost for local employment.”
